The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.

The ex-president was found guilty of orchestrating a armed takeover in the ninth month and sentenced more than over two decades in jail, but he remained under confinement pending appeals.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a preventative measure after fresh information were revealed.

This included attempting to break his tracking device and a invitation to a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a potential flight.

Judicial Records Show Escape Risks

In a filing authorising the custody, the magistrate said information from the unit overseeing Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his escape.

This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the protest called by his child.

His offspring, his son Flávio, who holds office as a senator, called for a gathering of his backers near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.

The senator wrote on digital networks on Friday: Will you battle for your homeland, or see it all from your mobile device there on your sofa? I urge you to struggle with us."

He said the gathering would be so backers could seek divine intervention for his health and for the return of democracy in our country."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the judge's determination was the chance of his move to diplomatic missions near the home, considering that the probes revealed a history of planning to seek refuge through a consular facility", a statement said.

The legal document underscores that the US embassy in the capital, Brasilia, is located around 13km from the former president's residence.

Worldwide Consequences

Bolsonaro's legal woes have drawn the ire of fellow conservative nationalist United States President Donald Trump, causing him to implement a half-rate duty on goods coming from Brazil.

The former president is being kept in a national police facility in Brazil's capital city and will have a detention review on the next day.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Supreme Court to permit him to serve his whole jail sentence under house arrest, with electronic monitoring.

They also petitioned that he be authorized to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he needed frequent medical attention for lung conditions and other illnesses.

Details of Guilty Verdict

The former president was convicted of heading a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Top judicial officials said that he had knowledge of a plot which involved plans to kill the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to detain and kill the presiding judge - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.

The conspiracy was thwarted because it failed to get the support of the armed forces officials. Lula was took office without issue on January 1st, 2023.

But a week later, on the eighth of January, many his followers attacked and damaged government buildings in the capital, Brasília.

The security forces stepped in and around 1,500 people were arrested.

The magistrates found that the protesters had been encouraged by him whose plan, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.

At the moment, his attorneys called the decades-long sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also barred from campaigning for office until 2060 - eight years later after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was aimed at blocking him running in the 2026 national vote.
